The Massachusetts Department of Revenue is mailing notices to individuals requesting supporting documentation for 2016 personal tax returns. These notices entitled “Notice of Intent to Assess – Information Request” ask for taxpayers to submit copies of W2s, final end of the year paystubs and social security cards. From what we gather, these notices are randomly being sent to individuals with refunds to ensure that returns are valid and not fraudulently being filed. We estimate that as many as 5% of individuals will receive these notices.
Recipients of these notices must provide this information within 30 days of receipt. Failure to submit this information could result in the refunds being delayed or forfeited all together. For those individuals who cannot locate their social security card, we suggest calling the Department of Revenue at the number listed on the notice before replying.
